This one was accessible thanks to a GR (hiking path).

Etoges village center

This close up on the church of Etoges clearly shows that all the slopes around the village are occupied by vineyards. Given the prices of Champagne, every useable area is required to produce grapes.

Vineyards in Fall

A view on the vineyards near the village of Etoges. We were late in the seasons, but surprisingly there were grapes remaining in the vineyards.

Life and death

When the lakes of Champagne were put in water, most of the trees on their shores were cut down... like the one in the foreground. Others survived or grew since then. The lake is at its lowest in Fall as it is prepared for the Spring floods.

dry lakeshore

This area is in the middle of the Lac d'Orient and is accessible only when the water is at its lowest. In that place, the ground was litterally covered with animal footprints. Later on, we saw a large boar on the side of the lake, coming towards us in full daylight. It finally smelled us and went back into the forest.

Picnic tables in Fall

Two simple picnic tables photographed in a small wood colored in yellow by Fall.

Incoming downpour

As we were nearing one of the great Champagne lakes, the sky turned a nasty grey. This looked very good with the low light of November and the very nice color of the trees, hence this photo. But it meant that we had to stay in our car battered by heavy rains for long minutes before being able to reach the lake shore through the forest.

Giffaumont

The village of Giffaumont is located just near the lake of the Der. In Summer it is a small sailing harbor. In Winter, the waters are so low that all the boats are taken out.
