The Provins parade included a series of men and women pretending to be suffering from a disease we are no longer used to in western Europe: leper. A leper village had been set up in one part of the town to remind us that the disease still exists in parts of the world. Leprous men and women wearing rags walked the streets, showing their wounds and carrying bells or wooden 'crecerelles' (I did not find a suitable translation) to warn healthy persons that they should stay away from them.
