The town of Provins allegedly dates back to roman times and this tower was long thought to have been built during this period, hence its name. It was in fact built in the 12th century but town documents indicate that there was a tower there before.
The tower of Caesar was used as watchtower, a prison, and as the last refuge of the town in wartime. The English nearly took it in the 15th century, as it was badly maintained.
Today, the tower can be visited and provides a nice view of the region.
You may not have seen it yet, but there are two lovers kissing passionately in the lower left part of this photo. I had seen them and would have preferred not to have them in the frame, but they were apparently too busy to move on and stayed there for a long time, so I took the photo anyway :-)
