This is the kind of buildings that you commonly found in Normandy: half timbered houses with thatched roofs. These are becoming a rarity as traditional barns are replaced by corrugated sheet hangars and houses by modern slate roof buildings. The change takes place rather fast as the old style houses do not last for very long or at least need constant care to remain in good shape. The thatched roofs need to be changed regularly (every 30 years or so) in order to preserve the walls.
In places like the Marais Vernier, this type of building is still fairly common.
