Falaises des Vaches Noires means litterally black cows cliffs. A legend says that they look like a herd of cattle from the sea. These cliffs are located between on the coast between Houlgate and Villiers. They are made of a very soft mixture of earth and rocks and erode very quickly.
Among the tocks that fall to the sea, you can find fossils, mainly seashells embedded in the rock. This area is in fact very popular and well known for this and many people go fossil hunting there (this is what the people you see on this photo are doing).
When doing so, one needs to be careful with the tides in order not to get caught in the middle of the cliffs as the top is closed to public.
