In summer 2002, Bertrand Delanoë the newly elected mayor of Paris decided that the riverside highways would be turned into beaches for the whole season.
Palmtrees were installed as well as beach umbrellas and tons of sand. This operation was called "Paris Plage" and attracted a lot of people thanks to concerts and numerous other events. Quite a strange sight.
