In 1694 an expedition of british and dutch troops aimed at capturing Brittany was launched against the town of Camaret. It was repulsed by the defences imagined by military engineer Vauban. This tower, named after its conceptor was armed with 11 guns and its lower parts were reinforced against artillery fire. It played a prominent role in the victory.
