Parish closes were surrounded by walls that separated their sacred area from the surrounding profane grounds. There were several entrances cut in this wall, including one main door that was often a triumphal gateway (porte triomphale) such as this one, in the small village of La Martyre.
These entrances were generally designed in a way that prevented cattle from entering the parish close.
