This square is named after field Marshall Cambronne, one of the generals of Napoleon. Cambronne is famous for two things that he said during the battle of Waterloo in 1815.
When he was first asked by the british general Colville if he wanted to surrender, he first replied "la Garde meurt mais ne se rend pas" (the old guard dies and does not surrender).
As the brits insisted, he made a more succint reply and simply said them "merde!" (shit!). This was later known as the "mot de Cambronne".
