Walls of the fort de la Rade

As many other parts of the Charentes coastline, the Aix island was fortified against the ever present threat of the british navy. The main fort of the island was long the fort de la rade. It was taken by an english raid in 1757 of 10000 men and sacked. During Napoleon's era, this fort was modernised and a second fort was built on the island.
