The Royaumont Abbey was founded in the 13th century (1228) by the king Saint Louis who stayed there at numerous occasions. From then to the French revolution, it has had periods of great prosperity, with up to 120 monks living it there, but also periods where its cistercian community was reduced to a mere 10 people.
After the revolution and its destruction, the abbey was used as a spinning mill until the middle of the 19th century when a new religious community settled there.
The Abbey is now the home of a foundation promoting classical music.
