Cheap hotels in Paris
If you plan to spend a few days in Paris and are on a tight budget, you will soon find out that there is not a large choice of affordable accomodation. Hotels with prices under 80 € a nigth are hard to find and appartment rentals are not suited for short stays. There ARE cheap hotels in Paris, however, with prices starting around 40 € a night, but you will need to make some concessions.
Cheap hotel chains
There are several hotel chains in France, with every pricing you can imagine. Some of them are very affordable, with prices for one night starting at around 35 €.
These hotels are generally reasonably modern, well maintained and offer easy online booking and payment. The main drawback is that they are more designed for sales representatives than tourists. They are generally located outside Paris in cheap or noisy areas (near the peripherique or near airports) and totally lack charm. I have tried hotels of the two chains listed below.
Hotels Première Classe
These hotels are part of the Louvre Hotel Group.
Prices: 36 to 48 € a night
None of these hotels are actually located in Paris. They are all in the suburbs.

Individual hotels
There are affordable family-run hotels in Paris, but do not expect the same comfort as in a three star one: full breakfasts, private bathrooms, elevators and phone are rare if you wish to pay less than 50 € a night.
Also avoid hotels located in the least secure neighbourhoods or Paris (Barbes, Belleville, Pigalle, rue Saint Denis).

A small 21 room hotel ideally located in the most central area of Paris. When I first checked its prices (around 40 €), I could not believe they could be so low for such an area. It seems to be designed more for travellers than regular tourists, though. There is another hotel with this name, but it has far higher prices.
Hotel de Lille

This 13 room hotel is just near the Louvre and has recently been renovated. It is probably the cheapest hotel in the area but not all rooms have a bathroom.

Again a small hotel ideally placed in the Marais quarter. Small and plain rooms at around 50 € a night.

A hotel located in the Latin quarter, not far from the Sorbonne, and a good choice for students and backpackers.
